A well-known trademark (WNTM) is a trademark that has become widely known in society. That is, it has undergone the procedure of recognizing a trademark as well-known. It is associated with certain goods or services and evokes certain ideas in consumers about the quality, prestige or other Cyprus Phone Number List characteristics of these goods or services.
Benefits of recognizing a trademark as well-known
- Raising the image and authority of not only the brand, but also the owner of a well-known trademark;
- The possibility of recognizing a trademark as well-known on a specific date, i.e. “retroactively”;

This is because a well-known trademark is a more valuable asset than a trademark that is not widely known to the public. Therefore, the owner of the HITM trademark can demand higher compensation from the infringer for the damage caused.
Also, a well-known trademark is associated by consumers with certain positive associations, such as quality, prestige and/or reliability. Therefore, recognition of the HITM trademark can contribute to increased sales of the goods or services under which it is used.

Recognition of HITM is carried out by decision of specialized government bodies in each country separately, i.e. on a territorial basis.

In order for a trademark to be recognized as HITM, it must meet the following criteria:
- Widely known in society. The trademark should be known not only to specialists in a certain industry, but also to the general public.
- Association with specific goods or services. A trademark must evoke in consumers certain ideas about the quality, prestige or other characteristics of the goods or services under which it is used.
